Top-12 Learn to Skate USA Program

Chaparral Ice teaches the Learn to Skate USA curriculum endorsed by U.S. Figure Skating,  US Speedskating, the Professional Skaters Association, and Special Olympics. We are proud to be listed as a top-12 Learn to Skate USA program (out of 1,000+ programs) for 2020-21, with more than 1,100 individual members!

Learn To Skate Class Basics
  • Free introductory “try it” class each Saturday
  • New session every 8 weeks, 8-week session $160
  • One 30-min. class each week, free skate rental included
  • Unlimited $5 public session admissions for registered skater
  • Annual Learn to Skate USA membership
  • Makeup classes
  • Beginner skaters should wear a helmet. Safety first!
  • Free "Try It" Classes

    Want to take skating lessons but not sure if classes are right for you? Try our FREE 30-minute Introductory Learn to Skate class on Saturdays (ages 6-up, 11:15 a.m. at Northcross), or our Snowplow Free “Try It” Class (ages 3-5, 10:15 a.m. at Northcross). Register online at least 24 hours before the Saturday class you wish to attend. Skate rental is included. Class size is limited.

     

    Free Class is for skaters who have never taken skating lessons. Free class may only be attended one time per skater. Registration is subject to eligibility. Registrations may be rejected based on eligibility.

    Youth Beginner Classes

    SNOWPLOW SAM 1-4
    For beginners age 3-5, classes focus on fun, safety, and building confidence while learning age-appropriate, play-based beginner skills. (Note, 1-2-3-4 are class levels, not skater ages.)

    BASIC 1
    For first-timers and beginners age 6-14 with no prior skating class experience. Class focuses on fun and safety while learning basic forward skating and introduces stops and backward skating.

     

    BASIC 2
    Skaters age 6-14 continue learning forward skating skills, one-foot glides, backward swizzles, snowplow stops, and more. Skaters must pass Basic 1 before registering for Basic 2.

    Youth Intermediate Classes

    BASIC 3-6

    Fundamental skating skills including forward and backward turns, crossovers, edges, and an introduction to simple jumps and spins. Introduction to basic athleticism, agility, balance, coordination, and speed, preparing skaters to advance to more specialized areas of skating.

    Adult Classes

    ADULT 1
    For new skaters age 14 and up with limited or no prior skating class experience, and for skaters returning to the ice after a long break. Adult 1 skaters must attend the Newcomer Orientation meeting on the first day of class.

     

    ADULT 2-4
    Forward and backward skating, basic turns, edges, crossovers, and stops geared to an adult learning style.

     

    ADULT 5-6
    Beginning jumps, spins, and advanced turns help prepare skaters for specialty areas in free skate, ice dance, and more. After Adult 6, skaters may advance to the Adult Pre-Bronze/Bronze Workshop or to the regular curriculum Free Skate classes.

    Advanced Free Skate Classes

    FREE SKATE: PRE-FREE SKATE THROUGH FREE SKATE 6

    Progressive skating skills, transitions, steps, spins, and jumps providing skaters a strong foundation for future elements. Skaters in Pre-Free Skate and above must be in their own skates, no rental skates.

    ADULT PRE-BRONZE/BRONZE FREE SKATE WORKSHOP

    Our adult free skate class follows a curriculum designed to prepare adult skaters to pursue the next step beyond the adult Learn to Skate USA program – U.S. Figure Skating testing and competitions! (USFS testing and competing require full USFS membership, available through Austin Figure Skating Club or directly through U.S. Figure Skating. Adults are welcome to enroll for regular Free Skate classes of the appropriate level, as well.)

    Specialty Classes

    Specialty classes are offered each session as a supplement to our regular Learn to Skate classes and to enhance the training experience for more advanced skaters. Classes cover a variety of disciplines including Power Skating, Edge Class, Artistry in Motion, Freestyle Stations, Ice Dancing, and more. Check out our brochure for upcoming classes!
